The Persistence of Lag

dal-a-lag

This morning’s post will be a short one. I just wanted to show you all what Dalaran (or is that Dal-a-lag) looks like sometimes on my poor little machine. Is it art, or is it error?

As much fun as it is to run around inside a living Dalí painting, here’s wishing for some fixes to the still-persistent slowdown in Dalaran. Does anyone else ever see things like this? I wonder. It’s giving me an idea for a new, surrealist MMO. . .

  1. I’ve never had it that bad — ususlly for me I see the city and buildings, but no people, just shadows. I think if we combined our screens we get the whole thing.

  2. For me, it’s often shattered into huge rainbows. I’ll screenshot it sometime. Interesting side note, on my regular gaming computer (with top of the line graphics card) I get weirdness. On my new computer (with similar graphics card), everything is fine.

  3. I have never seen anything like that on either of my machines, and one is a laptop. my fps drops to about 25 (10 on the laptop), but all the graphics are there. i do have to wait a few seconds for Dalaran to load when first entering, but that’s it. I run 4 MB RAM on my desktop and 3 MB on my laptop. Video memory is 256 MB and 128 MB (shared) respectively. Maybe that makes the difference?

  4. I had that happen quite a bit when Wrath first came out. It freaked me out the first time. It hasn’t happened recently, but I do drop down to about 9-12fps in Dalaran.

  5. I actually don’t have things not rendering in Dalaran, but the lag is very apparent… movement is slowed and the animations choppy at best.

This is worst, though, when it happens during raid time. My guild was prevented from doing Sarth+3 last Thursday because of heavy lag problems from multiple members… I even disconnected in the middle of an attempt!! Augh!

  6. they had to make this content this easy, no one would be able to do it with the shape the code and servers are currently in.

ok.. i usually am a bit negative, and think i’ll stay true to form here. We already know that the code has to be getting outdated.

They aren’t helping things, by making wintergrasp non instainced (aka non dedicated server) same with dalaran which is forced to render the upper city, the sewers and crystalsong all in one big chunk, coupled with the no fly rule where people couldn’t just afk nearby in tek forest and nagrand.

essentially the took a system on life support and gave it cancer.

  7. Dalaran is a very nicely designed city but it’s so damn small. It’s no wonder it lags. Sticking so many players in to such a small city was a big mistake. Really they should have gone back to having separate horde and alliance cities. More work for the designers but it would have halved the lag issues.

  8. The Crypt Fiend said exactly what I was going to post. I love Dalaran, but cramming so many people into such a small place is such a bad idea. I have a new computer, good connection, and already I feel like I’m back on my first PC with 512mb RAM, skipping forward a few steps, pausing, watching people run in circles for a few seconds..

It’s horrible.. I love having everything in one city, but this is ridiculous. I might start setting my hearth to Shatt and having my second-account-mage port me back to Northrend when necessary :/

  9. I agree with typhoonandrew. It looks like it is rendering issues. To my limited knowledge lag will prevent showing the other players as it needs to download what thea are wearing, etc. Dalaran itself is on your computer and does not need to be downloaded. what is your HDD doing during this time? try some driver updates and check the addons and other programs running. Maybe there is one that is a resource hog. I have to always disable Punkbuster as it is horrible for memory for example.

As for lag in Dalaran, you can always log out somewhere else and just go into the big city for a visit. My server is underpopulated so lag is ok (Iam not sure if that is good or bad :S )

I hope you figure it out. I would hate to have my healer with those issues.

  10. The game is fine for me everywhere else.

This is one of the layers of Dalaran, one of the first things that loads. I see it pretty often, but the other layers tend to appear within a couple of seconds.

My laptop is a good one, fairly new, but I do have a known glitch in my video card–Brio could tell you exactly what–but I’ve never taken it in for a fix because I’ve never been able to stomach the prospect of a couple weeks without a computer.

  11. I remember Orgrimmar/Ironforge being something like Dalaran back before they put auction houses in all the major cities. Apparently Blizzard forgot the lesson they learned way back when.

At least there’s no grate of death to fall into every time you enter the city (the single most compelling reason to play horde back in the day) 🙂

  13. It takes me forever to zone in to Dalaran. Whether flying, porting, or crawling up through the sewer, everything just sort of stops and chops for a couple of minutes. Once it’s loaded though, it’s all there. I can deal with that.

What I can’t deal with is instance lag. The kind of lag that we saw for about 3 weeks before the last patch that essentially made the game unplayable. People left the guild, realm and game over that lag.

  14. SHATTRAH CITY Version 2.0

I blame Blizzard for this. Knowing how much lag we had in Shattrah City as a central port for both Horde and Alliance, they decided to save themselves development costs by making a central city SMALLER.

  15. I was in Org the other day and it was like this. Mailboxes weren’t being rendered. The Lunar festival decorations were taking forever to load. I assumed it was my connection though since I was the only one seeing it.

Fortunately for me my server is very under-populated. I used to play on Blackrocka and I can’t even imagine what 500+ people would be like in Dalaran. At most we get 100 on peak hours so I don’t have too many problems.

    Sounds like you should transfer

  16. I’ve had the same experience a time or two. However in my case it never acutally renders until I log completely out of WoW and then get back into the game.

  17. I have had that happen to me a few times, and not only in Dalaran, but in Shattrath too. It usually stays like that as well, but quite often I can get things back to normal by selecting ‘window’ mode in the graphics option, and then going back to full screen.

I tend to suffer more from ‘Inability to Move for 5 seconds or more’ if I Hearth back to Dalaran, and my Voidwalker has a fit, shaking wildy from side to side for 10 seconds or so with ‘teleport sickness’. Once all the characters have appeared, things return to normal.
