So Long, Shadowlands!

You were a rough expansion to start but ultimately just okay. Ultimately, it ended up being pretty fun towards the conclusion of the expansion.

What happened to me during the past several months?

After my previous guild decided to disband from raiding and leadership stepped down, I was idle for several months before I signed on with Death Jesters on Stormrage (Yes, that Death Jesters). It’s been a thrill and although I’m disappointed for not being able to secure Cutting Edge in any of the tiers, I’m looking forward to Dragonflight. Although the organization isn’t pursuing top ranks and pushing high-end progression, the atmosphere continues to be fun and focused. It’s a far cry from previous years when they would frequently challenge for top placements. Now the guild is home to players on the older side with families and other obligations which prevent progression raiding.

I did it again

After a few months on the roster, I volunteered to help with recruiting efforts. I agreed to headhunt and recruit for specific classes or roles that we needed and continue posting guild ads on various communities to raise our visibility and profile for interested free-agent players.

That was enough to get me elevated to a leadership position.

I don’t know why this happens to me.

I hope I get a raise to my repair bill stipend at the end of the year.

It’s a weird spot to be in since after I winded down Conquest, I told myself I just wanted to play the game. Proper Villains allowed me to do just that all the way from the end of Legion through to Shadowlands before we succumbed to Castle Nathria.

Anyway, if you’re one of the few people that still check on my blog once in a while, DJ’s is looking specifically for:

  • DPS Warrior
  • DPS Monk
  • Any ranged DPS

The roster size is sitting at 25 but we would love to raise it up to 28. We raid Friday and Saturday nights from 11 PM Eastern to 2 AM Eastern. Raiding aspirations are CE for all of Dragonflight and to do that on a 2-night schedule means we need to be efficient and quick to learn.

Shadowlands Review

With the expansion wrapping up, it’s time to discuss what worked well and what didn’t. I had high hopes at the start. Torghast seemed like a fun piece of content but it quickly became an added requirement when legendary currency was tied to it.

What worked

  • Covenants: Seems like a big stride overall in the reputation system. This has carried over into Dragonflight with the four new factions. It reminds me of a mini in-game battlepass for each of them with assorted rewards and event unlocks.
  • Legendaries: Revisiting a few legendaries from Legion was fun. I would’ve appreciated more diversity in choice as a Holy Priest, but Flash Concentration was just too good.
  • Torghast: As mentioned at the start, the roguelike content for WoW was a nice diversion. I think revisiting something like this has it’s place in the game but the reward and systems structure warrant a closer look. I didn’t like feeling I had to run it twice every week at the start to continue to power up my legendary in addition to everything else that needed to be farmed.
  • Fated Raids: A bit controversial among some, but I felt it was a neat mechanic to revisit and recycle Nathria and Sanctum to make them somewhat relevant again. Great way to add a bit of complexity and depth to some of the Mythic encounters while training players to zero in more on the buff mechanics.
  • Threads of Fate: One of the few alt friendly systems added to the game. It was easy to just zone out and complete various quests without following a linear track. Glad to see it come back to Dragonflight.
  • Creation Catalyst: This was a late expansion addition as an element of bad luck protection for gear. Makes sense with the introduction of tier gear again to give everyone an eventual path to their full set.
  • Dinar Tokens: Another fun late expansion addition saw a way for players who missed out on certain weapons, trinkets, and rings as an alternative way of obtaining them. Yes, I’m looking right at you, Soulwarped Seal of Wrynn. The hard limit of 3 tokens was a fair restriction. I ended up with a surplus of 2 tokens that I’m just going to use on Shadow gear for leveling (Hello, Antumbra, Shadow of the Cosmos).
  • Zereth Mortis: It was just pleasant to be in a new outdoor zone that’s vibrant and not all doomy or gloomy. Still not sold on Poc-o-Poc then again, I’ve never really been into those pet things or any of the cool outdoor features.
  • Tazavesh: I hope we get to come back to this place in the future as it’s own capital city somehow. It made for a fun mega dungeon. Between this, Mechagon, and Karazhan, it’s been my favourite.
  • Castle Nathria and Sepulcher: Although Nathria was where my Proper Villains stopped raiding, I still enjoyed the encounters. Denathrius was one of the better end-tier bosses. Sun King is one of those rare bosses that also emphasizes healing directly as a mechanic and allows us to go off (especially Holy Priests).
  • Mythic+: The end-game dungeon system gets further refinement. Not only did we get new affixes, but now we’re getting a seasonal rotation of dungeons. It started with Season 4 and revisiting old favourites like Mechagon and Karazhan, but boy if there was ever a case against voting and democracy, Grimrail Depot is the perfect example of it. Definitely not fun in a close-quarters environment with the likes of Quaking and Shrouded.

What didn’t work

  • Currency grinding (Anima, Soul Ash, etc): Three straight expansions worth of grinding for borrowed power gains gets kind of annoying. We had Artifact Power in Legion, Azerite Power in Battle for Azeroth, and then a combination of Anima, Soul Ash, Soul Cinders, and Cosmic Flux (to a lesser extent). Normally, I’m fine with most currency grinds but this just felt excessive.
  • The Maw: For the first few weeks, this wasn’t so bad. What got to me was the constant weekly hunt for souls to turn in at our Covenant in order to unlock more of the features (and it ended up increasing in quantity). I liked the element of constant danger but the inability to mount was just so troublesome. I was extremely happy after getting the Maw mount as it made traversing the large zone that much easier. If there were more teleports to areas around the zone, it might’ve helped eased the frustration and annoyance I felt.
  • Korthia: I can’t explain why this zone didn’t connect with me. Maybe it just reminded me of the Maw too much. There were some nice activities and fun encounters, but aside from the story progression and the various character moments, Korthia wasn’t a zone that Iooked forward to.
  • Soulbinds: Didn’t really feel connected with any of them. It did feel more like a hassle to switch to the one I wanted to use for various activities (Raiding vs M+).
  • Conduits: This might be why I didn’t care much for the soul binds. Not only did we have to get the right conduits to drop, but we also had to progress and upgrade them accordingly. I already that for normal gear and it was an annoyance to me to need to do that for abilities and spells.
  • Covenant Swapping: Although Covenants were fine, it was the swapping between Covenants that proved to be an undertaking at the start of the expansion. Some were suited for raiding and others were better for M+. Had to jump through multiple hoops and grind some more just to change allegiances. The current iteration should’ve been in from the beginning.
  • Sanctum of Domination: Painsmith and Sylvanas were absolute grinds. I did not look forward to stepping into this place and my best showing was only 1 Mythic boss cleared when it was level relevant.

There are more things that I’ve forgotten about or that have changed over the course of the expansion, I’m sure. Right now, all eyes are looking towards Dragonflight at the end of the month. Whether or not Shadowlands will be remembered fondly or not is a question to be answered in the next decade.

Suggested Holy Priest Addons and Weak Auras (TWW Edition: Season 2)

(Updated for Patch 11.1)

  • March 31, 2025: Updated for TWW Season 2.
  • September 16, 2024: Updated for TWW Season 1.
  • May 4, 2023: Added new Weakauras for season 2, removed season 1 Weakauras
  • February 6, 2024: Added and refreshed Weakauras and compiled a list of addons below
  • April 21, 2024: Added new Weakauras for Season 4, removed Season 3

For general Priest play

Holy Priest HUD (Luxthos)

This is a heads-up display I keep right under my character model. Helps me determine at a glance what’s off cooldown that I can cast (and I can see my feet in case I’m standing in anything particularly dangerous). Switched over to Luxthos for Dragonflight.

Luxthos Priest HUD

Innervated

A bar that shows your Innervate duration. I position this right over my player model.

Bar showing Innervate time remaining.

Funki’s Clickable Consumables and Raid Buffs

Shows you what consumables or raid buffs you’re missing and if anyone in your party or raid is missing Power Word: Fortitude. Your raid leader will love you.

Screenshot showing missing buffs or consumables.

Power Infuse M+

If you’re like me and are pugging dungeons or raids and don’t really know who to hit Power Infusion with, this will let you know when players are using their damage buffs. You can adjust the priority of classes. This is great if you just want to get it on cooldown and don’t really care to know who to give Power Infusion to in a pickup group. Or you could just give it to a tank and get yelled at.

Answered Prayers and Apotheosis Tracker Bar

Places a vertical bar that shows the time left in both Apotheosis or from the Answered Prayers talent. You’ll want to use this time cast the spells that reduce the cooldown on your Holy Words (like Prayer of Healing for Sanctify and Heal or Flash Heal for Serenity).

Screenshot of the vertical Apotheosis Tracker Bar that shows how much time is left.

Lightwell Tracker

Shows when Lightwell is available and the number of remaining charges.

Rhapsody Tracker

Tracks the Rhapsody buff. Since it stops going up at 20 stacks, the timer will reset when you cast Holy Nova.

Trinket Tracker

Tracks the equipped trinkets. I like to position this above my player frame. Will highlight if you have an on-use ability (like Mote of Sanctification) or display stack counts (Flask of the Solemn Night).

For Dungeons

Abiecherry’s S2 TWW Dungeon Casts

Shows all the different spell casts in dungeons.

Season 2 Dungeons – TWW

This one also shows the CD remaining for when trash mobs do their big AoE hits

AutoQueue

Playing with friends? Don’t need to manually hit accept all the time when they want to signup for keys. Now it just auto accepts your role for you.

For Raids

Raid Ability Timeline

Ties into DBM or Bigwigs, and makes a vertical timeline bar of upcoming encounter abilities.

Liquid – Liberation of Undermine

Our guild subscribes to the Patreon here but now that the race to world first is over, Liquid’s pack is now available.

Liquid Weak Auras

Required for the above to work

Liquid Anchors

Liquid’s anchors are also required. Use this to move the bars and other components around on your screen.

Sprocketmonger – Don’t Pop

For those of you popping mines.

Kaze MRT Timers

For the raid teams that make extensive use of Viserio’s and MRT, I’ve been using this WA for added notifications.

Interrupt Anchor

Can be used for any encounter and doesn’t need set up from players, but the raid leader would need to create the interrupt rotation and add their spell and NPC ID for it to work and appear in MRT.

World Marker Cycler

Primarily for raid leaders if you need to cycle and mark locations quickly.

Request Innervate

Clickable Weakaura, where it auto-whispers a Druid in your group for an Innervate by simply clicking their name and icon.

DF Friendly Nameplates

For more contrasting names and easier readability.

Addons

Baganator

Inspired by Adibags and BetterBags. I switched over to this one as well.

CursorTrail

Great if there’s a lot of stuff or effects on the screen and you need to visually track your mouse. This is true for healers since we must target our players in raid frames.

Bigwigs

After using DBM for over a decade, I decide to just switch to Bigwigs for this expansion.

Details

For seeing where I am on the Dispels meter and viewing cause of death on players in game.

Method Raid Tools

Mostly for tracking notes in raids. Used on conjunction with Viserios.

xCT+ Combat Text

Used to condense all the combat damage and crit into one area so it’s not all over the screen and obstructing your visuals.

OmniCD

Plater

I use Jundies plater profile. This has been updated for Season 2.

RC Loot Council

For guilds looking to assign loot.

RSA

Announces raid cooldowns used by yourself in chat.

WeakAuras

Required for all the WeakAuras above.

ElvUI for the base UI, and I switched over to LuckyOne’s package.

WarpDeplete

Tracks your M+ progress in the key.

I’m Bach

Actually, I’m not quite Bach. I wish though. Still working on Bach’s double and I just started looking at Bach’s Allemande (this kid was thirteen).

Let me catch you up on where I’ve been. After my previous guild disbanded, on a whim and at the request of a colleague from work, I’ve decided to play *inhale*:

The Critically Acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV with an expanded free trial which I can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 for free with no restrictions on play time.

And it was a nice change of pace!

Combat felt slower and I played a White Mage which meant I felt limitations offensively (for obvious reasons). Played through some of the raids and progressed all the way into Shadowbringers and into Endwalker. The community was a far cry from what I expected compared to other gaming communities. As an end game player, I enjoyed the raids. The mechanics were similar but also different from what I was used to. The Endwalker story was a wonderful finish to this entire saga of FF14 and I hadn’t quite felt this invested in a game’s storyline since the Mass Effect trilogy.

Although once I reached Endwalker’s end game, I didn’t feel quite as attached anymore. The raids were fun but I just didn’t feel compelled to compete and grind. Much of that may have been attributed to my inability to find a consistent raid group to party with though. I am often more motivated by the party around me as opposed to the game in front. Without a steady raid group giving me purpose, I don’t feel drawn or attached. This is a pattern that occurred throughout my WoW career since I’ve always valued stability and longevity.

Then Lost Ark came out and that took over a big chunk of my play time. I have a Bard on US West but now I’m leveling another one on US East. I don’t know why I’m doing that to myself, but partly because I have trouble finding consistent people to run with. I reached the 1300 item level bracket early on compared to others I knew which meant I didn’t have much else to do or anyone to play with for the raids or abyss dungeons.

My return to the World of Warcraft

“Matticus. We need a Priest.”
“I’m retired.”
“You’re bored. Come play with us.”

He’s right. I had been raiding on and off with <Iconic> for a while. One day a week raiding guild doesn’t quite get me back to where I was before when I was raiding 3 days in Mythic. I had just been messing around on my Ret Paladin and enjoying life as melee DPS. It’s so satisfying seeing so many DPS numbers.

But when I got the call up to get off the bench and get back to front line raiding again, I knew I couldn’t ignore it. I’m now a part of the longstanding <Death Jesters> (yeah, that one, formed in 2005 and that guild is almost old enough to drink). Picked a great time to return what with Holy Priest being both amazing and incredibly fun with the set bonuses.

Server transfers are the next step but since the guild is on Stormrage and my name is taken, I point you to the header image where I mull over some of the names I’m considering. Name selection is harder than customizing appearances, I’ll say.

We just reached Anduin on Heroic and we’re looking for more players. Managed to just barely take a look into the second intermission with the wall of walking ghosts. We’ll be able to save Anduin next week following reset (especially with the 4 piece I’m now wearing courtesy of LFR).

Still have to think of a name I’m satisfied with. Ideas?

Another Guild Chapter Closed

I don’t know where to start. It’s 30 degrees in my room and I have no air conditioning. It feels like I’m encased in a cocoon of hotness. Not sure which of you out there still actively reads blogs. It seems the Warcraft community has since migrated to streams, YouTube videos, and Discord communities. People like me are a relic from a past era. For now, I’m going to write this post for me in the hopes of getting some kind of closure that I never received for all five of you that’re still following me.

It has been 40+ days since the guild decided to call it quits for raiding in the Castle Nathria tier. There is no intention of reforming the organization for patch 9.1 or beyond. Aside from the GM, I was the longest remaining tenured raider in the roster as I had joined at the tail end of Tomb of Sargeras but began actively raiding in Antorus (Listen, I wanted no part of progression Kil’jaeden at the time so I was content with letting their existing roster finish it all out).

After two expansions, my time has ended. I haven’t decided what to do and 9.1 release is imminent.

What happened?

We were doing well enough on Stone Legion Generals. The Sunday night we had been getting some good early looks at phase 3. Monday rolls around and a message goes out in Discordl from our raid leader to everybody saying that leadership has decided to cease raiding for the rest of the tier. Every raider would be receiving a cut of the guild bank and that we would re-evaluate for 9.1. It was rather abrupt and caught me off guard. I can only surmise what happened but if I were to hazard a guess, I would say that more players were either burning out and planning to leave or our officers themselves were directly burning out. I will never know the exact cause of our demise.

If I had to be honest, I saw this coming a long ways away at the start of the expansion. During Battle for Azeroth, we had achieved a level of stability and accomplished our Mythic raiding goals from Uldir, to Dazar’alor, to Eternal Palace, and Nyalotha (We do not talk about Mythic Uu’naut. We cleared every end boss at the Mythic level. To get from that level to not even lasting a full introductory raid tier in Shadowlands is just tragic.

I can point to one incident that started our downward descent. During the early days of the expansion as we were reinforcing our roster, our aim was to carry a team of 27 players. It was a solid number that allowed for flexibility and accounted for any holes in the roster or encounter specific strategies.

Where did it go wrong?

Nepotism ruins everything. We had a player come in who was a family member of an officer. I didn’t think anything of it at the time because I figured that the officer would not be involved in the recruiting process at all whatsoever and abstain (as they should because it’s a conflict of interest). If the recruit passed their trial, it would be by their own merit. In fact, that’s the way it should be otherwise you get accusations of bias and nepotism which leads to a loss of trust. This idea of trust is a fragile thing. It can take ages to build up and develop but it can be lost in a flash.

Every trial has a private channel (where they are excluded) that’s set up where raiders can put in their observations of how they interacted or played during the two weeks they’re with us. I don’t know anything about DPS, so I won’t weigh in on that stuff. I’ll usually pipe up if I notice the trial is dying more often than usual or getting hit by mechanics more than normal. I don’t believe in making excuses for them, that’s up to the trial to do during their midtrial review. All I add is a data point from a healer’s perspective. It’s up to our officer team to decide what to do and how to interpret that data. Sometimes they’ll follow up and review the log and the answer is self explanatory (For example, trial took an unavoidable hit but didn’t receive a heal because it looked like they were out of range and didn’t make it back to the group in time before they died). We’re also permitted and encouraged to make observations about their attitude in areas outside of raid (For example, this player makes some pretty questionable jokes that’s enough to give me pause).

In any case, one of our veteran raiders made an observation about the trial’s performance midway through a raid. I can’t remember the specifics but I didn’t believe it was a direct attack on the player, but more a comment on their play. It was a simple mistake and could’ve been shrugged off. However, the officer took it personally and just went off on the raider. We happened to be in-between pulls, but I snapped off a few quick messages saying that the officer’s remarks were offside and unnecessary. I sided with our raider on this one. The night was almost over anyway and most of our players were too busy focused on raiding but after the night was over, more of our veterans stepped up and said the same thing. I tried to defuse and disarm the situation by asking everyone to take a breath, go to bed, and come back tomorrow and it could be discussed further at length.

What I failed to account for was that our officer had a bit of a rocky relationship (possibly a vendetta) against the initial raider.

It didn’t matter. Within two raid lockouts, we had lost four players. Was it a direct result of what had occurred? I don’t know. I never spoke to those players after so I can’t say it with absolute certainty, but I would not be surprised if it was a factor. I knew there were another few more that were going to wait and see but already had one foot out the door.

The trust had been irrevocably lost.

Our raid atmosphere was never the same.

The friendly and welcoming culture was gone.

I could tell our raid had become much more guarded than usual. It felt like the relationship between leadership and the rest of the raid had been shattered. For my part, I just simply shook it off, tried to forge ahead, and do what I had been brought on to do: Play to the best of my ability.

For the next several months, I watched as new raiders came in and veterans left. During that period, it felt like were constantly trying to recover and stabilize. We were so busy trying to catch our breath. Not only that, it doesn’t help that we’re also on Alliance and it’s already difficult to recruit on this side of the compared to our Horde… colleagues? Nemesis? It was a constant cycle of losing veterans and trying to fill gaps with recruits.

What happens now?

I had another fellow raider reach out to me directly to apply to one of their guild’s raid crews. I’m still mulling over what I want to do. From what I’ve been able to see on forums and recruiting sits, Holy Priests aren’t exactly high in demand (much less one who only plays a Holy Priest at a Mythic raid level). I could play Shadow but I would not be able to come close to the skill level required there.

I’ve been asked by followers and friends to switch to Horde. The recruiting pool is much larger and there are way more raiding guilds to choose from. I can’t do it though. I even play a Pandaren which fits in either faction! My main has always been Alliance. I played Warcraft 1 and Warcraft 2 when I was literally a kid and my disdain for the Horde runs way too deep (although I have made Horde alts to check out their story in various expansions). Besides, simply faction changing to Horde seems like I’m giving in and exacerbating the issue even further.

For the past month and change, I had stepped into Final Fantasy 14. It’s a nice change of pace. I never picked it up before because I didn’t think I had the time to balance two MMOs so I’m playing this and enjoying the single player experience. My thoughts on the game will come at a separate time, but at the moment, I don’t foresee myself getting involved at the high end game level.

I don’t know what I want to do. My options are:

  • Raid Mythic at a high level (and chase Cutting Edge)
  • Raid Mythic at a moderate pace (Risk not getting CE)
  • Raid Heroic (chase AotC)
  • Not raid at all (and basically play out the expansion storylines)

Until I figure out what I’m looking for, it’s hard to find a guild that fits. Really my goal is to look for a disciplined raiding to join. I’ve played WoW for so long because I’ve been extremely fortunate in the guilds I joined which is what’s helped keep my subscription going. The content and expansion features to me were whatever, but it was the people I played with that made everything all the more worthwhile. My only major dealbreaker is that I can’t commit to Wednesday nights due to orchestra resuming soon.

If you’re an Alliance guild that’s looking for a mechanically sound healer who probably can’t torch healing meters that high that doesn’t have raids on Wednesdays, let me know.

Alas, I’ve disabled comments just because the amount of incoming spam from bots is just too overwhelming and I have yet to find a solution so far that doesn’t take up my time.

Halfway through Mythic Castle Nathria

Thought I’d drop in and post a quick update as it’s been a while. January’s been a busy month (both professionally and personally). From a progression standpoint, we are now 6/10 M. I managed to stream a few of those kills so I’ll be sure to clip and those videos onto here for those looking for a Holy Priest perspective there.

Guildwise, we’ve seen the departure of a few players. Our current recruiting needs are a Mage and a Holy Paladin. If you’re interested in learning more, drop us a line and apply here.

Thoughts so far

The limited raid drops continue to be punishing. I understand the dialing back of loot, but it really does feel bad to only get 3 items in a 20 player raid. Though that’ll change with the increased raid drops along with the new Valor system.

Shriekwing is a good entry level Mythic boss. Once you understand the patterns, it’s easy to plan around them even if you can’t actually see the Echoing Screech.

Huntsman is one of those inconsistent bosses. Either you have some dumb wipes to it, or it gets cleared in short order. There is a large amount of healing that has to go out here because of the extra ghosts. For Holy Priests, it is just like healing fish in a barrel between Holy Word: Sanctuary, Circle of Healing, and such.

Hungering Destroyer was the first real test. This one’s hard to heal through as Holy and I can see why a Discipline Priest is almost mandated here. You have to be precise with timings and prioritizing players (and groups). Coordination is key to managing the leech and the health drain.

Sun King was amazing and I haven’t had that much fun healing a boss since Valithria (Icecrown Citadel). Lots of planning that goes into this one especially on a week-to-week basis as player gear improves and cooldown timings continue to be fluid.

Haven’t healed Lady Darkvein yet and I’m not sure if I’ll get the chance to. I’ll explain later but from what I see, advance knowledge of trig is essential.

Artificer Xymox saw a change of minus one healer, and plus a DPS. I was the healer would get cut but I did managed to make through many attempts into phase 3. Actually, this entire encounter can be summarized by making it through two key moments in phase 3 and if your group is able to do that, then Xymox falls.

Now what?

We’ve now cleared to Council. Our leadership has decided that the clock has started and that we’re going to look at extensions from hereon out until this tier is complete. That’ll mean no shots for me on Lady Darkvein or Artificer Xymox. I’m okay with this. I felt that putting me in the group against Darkvein would be detrimental as I haven’t seen the encounter at all and that the time spent for me to experience it would be outweighed by time spent on the remaining bosses in the instance. There would be a lot of wasted time in that sense. Xymox I can probably step in for as I’ve seen enough of what has to happen and how to respond appropriately.

That’s all for now! Trying to find written Council guides for healing is tough as there doesn’t seem to be any at all. Most of it is all on video and I don’t have the patience to sit through different ones. I miss the age of the written word!
