On my daily patrol through the Plus Heal forums, I came across this thread with one very important question by Sundotz.
If I proc Divine Aegis ( for 12 sec) and then apply PW: S (15 sec after absorbed), which shield is absorbing damage first?
I could have commissioned a study on this with the assistance of guildies. But I decided to take matters in my own hands and test it out only in such a way that true Dwarves would do it.
I’d tackle the Molten Colossus of Ulduar after activating both shields in an attempt to see which happened first. Here’s 5 combat logs with different cast sequences. Log’s been trimmed somewhat.

So in conclusion, while not technically a scientifically valid test, I’ve conceded that the order in which the different absorb effects are used are based on which one happens to land first. If a DA activates before a PW:S, then the DA gets consumed. If a PW:S lands first followed by a DA, the PW:S gets chomped alive before the DA.
A simple, easy, and cheap test. 5 minutes. 45 gold.
Done.
But also incorrect. So take this entire post with a grain of salt.
Because they are both falling off on the same hit, i don’t think you can conclude which is absorbed first based on that, except that its consistent.
the combat log might switch the order that it reports for a single hit depending on how data is stored (stack vs queue for example).
If you could test with smaller hits, so that they fall of on different hits, it would be more conclusive.
Hey! – Thanks for the post fellow healer buddy!
But…. the above post does have a point.
Sundotz
@Sundotz: Probably! I _did_ say it wasn’t scientifically valid. I’ll let someone else do the actual work :\.
Ha Ha. Not knocking your work…
I actually did the same thing as you. 😛
Your conclusion makes perfect sense to me. How upset would you be if you had an aegis with 1 second to run left and a shield with 30s and it used your PW:S first? If it doesn’t use the one that runs out first I think Blizz should fix it!
So,if I understand this correctly:
A target has a 5K DA on him and you slap a 5K PWS on him,a 7k hit will consume DA plus 2K from PWS?
I think it is awfully sweet that Matt is willing to give his life for the betterment of Disc Healers everywhere! 🙂
*hug*
I don’t believe that being one-shot by Ulduar trash does this experiment justice. I think rather, it would be more effective to have someone or something hit you that does less damage in order to see which bubble pops first. My guess is that PW:S would break before DA and that DA is always considered a secondary shield regardless of whether or not PW:S was cast first.
Great props to Matticus for the entertainment value of us, watching him die repeatedly, in such an unscientific series of tests 😛
You made my Friday. What a riot! I always learn so much from your posts. This was just eye candy for a working day that I wish would go by faster.
Now if I could just get my reaction times faster.
Made me smile, thanks 🙂
As has already been said even by Matticus himself, not all that scientific, but fun all the same.
Probably want to do this in a duel environment with a fast casing opponent so that the different shields don’t dissipate on the same hit. I’d say test duelling with a rogue or a hunter might be a good way to do it… lots of hits quickly but no single hit that is likely to kill both shields at the same time.
I would hope that the game mechanics would use the shield that expires first… err… first, if you see what I mean 🙂
Of course here’s a pair of problems to add… and not ones we’ll see the answers for soon.
So if you have DA up and you PW:S and then you get another Crit to Refresh DA, which one does it come from it first?
And what about the shield from the Legendary Healing Mace Bubble, same rules?
